Paint, Paint…Expensive It Ain’t

Jun 7th, 2009 by Mark

I was working with a client last week and something dawned on me. He was asking me about certain decorative details and finishes and I kept referring back to the paint.

It dawned on me just how much I rely on paint to make a room come alive or to set a mood. Certain painting techniques also add drama and accent certain architectural features (or create the illusion of an architectural feature where none exist). Paint also works wonders to hide imperfection, unevenness and unbalance in a room.

Paint dates a room or makes it as fresh as yesterday.

Best of all, it’s the quickest and one of the least costly improvements that you can make to a room…especially in a down economy when you just need a lift but don’t have much cash.

The mood that paint can create is truly amazing…so don’t ever underestimate the importance of that aspect of your redesign plan.

I’ve taken dull, drab rooms and given them the illusion of being adjacent to an outdoor pool…. all that cool blue reflective watery serenity…just with a can or two of just the right cool blue in an eggshell finish (Hint: don’t forget to add a cup of the wall color to the ceiling white…this makes the transition between the walls and the ceiling less jarring and makes the ceiling appear higher).

Likewise, I’ve taken a room that get’s no natural sunlight and given it a Sunkist hue that appears to be sunlight reflecting on the walls…all with a sunny yellow (Hint : choose a clear yellow with no green undertones. A client of mine used to call it “edible yellow”; you just want to take a bite out of it…it looks so refreshing!).
